The objective of this project was to design and build a wooden object 1:1 to span 4 feet and hold at least 100 pounds. My partner and I decided to add the concept of motion and portability to our design, so we designed a structure that could expand and contract.
Our final project was composed of 7 layers. Each layer contained a series of shearing pieces andspacer blocks. They rested next to the other layers along a wooden dowel which allowed all of the pieces to rotate. We designed wooden “keys” to lock the structure into place when it was expanded to allow it to bear weight and when it was fully compressed it was small enough to fit inside a carry-on bag.
